Teak sound frog
100% fair traded
Material: teak
Dimensions: approx. 8.00 cm
Origin: Bali; Indonesia
The sound frog is a hand-carved musical instrument made of wood (teak) with a sound box and toothed back comb. A wooden stick (included in delivery) is used to stroke these back teeth from the back to the front, creating a deceptively similar frog croak.
The timbre of the musical instrument is related to the size of the frog, more precisely the sound box. Big sound frogs have a deep sound, smaller ones have a high, bright sound. By holding the holes closed, you can also create different tones.
Origin of the sound frog:
The sound frog has its origins in an old Asian fairy tale, which is said to be based on a true story. So it is said that a young prince illegally fell in love with a non-noble girl. They then always met at a secret location on a distant swamp and played the "sound frog" as their identification mark. One night, however, the lovers got lost and they were never seen again. But the call of the sound frog was still heard at night.
Nowadays, lovers give themselves the sound frog as a sign of their great affection.
