The bells are made from pure brass, like many other objects used in Indian rituals. On each brass-bell there is a small handle with a symbol. Sounding these bells is said to summon whatever one wishes to summon. The bells are used in many different rituals and were probably borrowed from Christianity into the traditional rites of the Andean peoples.
This brass bell has a handle with the symbol of the tumi. The Tumi comes from the north of Peru and was originally a knife. Today, this symbol can be seen on many objects.
