About MANTHOC:
MANTHOC was created in the course of the strike movement in 1978, when many children had to work to compensate for their father's loss of earnings. MANTHOC means "movement of the working children", but this does not mean that all children work constantly. On the contrary, most go to school regularly and work "only" in the afternoons, on weekends or during the holidays. Their work is a basic condition for the survival of their families - every child in the slums must contribute to the family income sooner or later, whether they like it or not. Perhaps that is precisely why "work" is by no means the main topic at the children's meetings. They talk about the garbage on the street, how bad the school is, about the authorities trying to clear a part of the occupied country by force, and about personal or family problems like drinking and beating parents. These discussions are always linked to the question: "And what can we do about it?"
