The production of ceramics has a long tradition in Peru. Originally, these were made and painted by hand in small family businesses in the area around Ayacucho in Peru. But also in Lima and other areas of Peru there are now artisans who are very skilled in the manufacture of these products. Although each region has developed its own style over time, the South American influence of the indigenous artists is unmistakable.
This beautiful scented lamp has been lovingly designed by the artists and craftsmen of the Jatari Wari cooperative, and has been manufactured and painted by hand. The design is typical of Peruvian art ceramics. In addition to the nativity figures modeled on the front in traditional clothing, the landscape with mountains, cacti and characteristic buildings from Peru is reproduced around them.
The cooperative itself was founded in Chorrillos in 2008. In 2009, the cooperative received a certificate of work from the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism. Many of the members had already worked in ceramic production years before the cooperative in the arts and crafts was founded. Most of them started in Ayacucho. However, since there were increasing problems of terrorism in this region and the transport of goods was made difficult by poor transport connections, the artisans gradually immigrated to the Limas district. The cooperative consists of a total of 20 members. Most of them own family businesses with only a few or no external members. The different families mostly produce the same products. Although some are specialized in certain areas (for example ornaments, figures, churches), these craftsmen can also produce the other products. In addition, many of the families specialize in the same products. On the one hand this helps with the distribution of orders, on the other hand it also increases the competition. Because of this, all craftsmen always strive to produce the highest quality in order to keep up with the competition.
